Getting Started With Grid-Tied Solar


A grid-tied solar system generates energy from the sun and stores it in the utility grid, so you can use it anytime you need it.

If you have access to the utility grid, and your main concern is getting the most value from your investment, grid-tied solar is the way to go. It has the lowest upfront cost because you don’t have to buy batteries to store the power you generate. The grid takes care of storage for you.

During peak hours, you may generate more electricity than you need to power your home. In most states, you can sell this excess power to the utility company, which stretches the value of your investment even further.

Solar Panels

Simply put, panels absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity. Panels are rated by power output (in watts). More efficient panels come at a cost premium, but take up less space on your property.

Racking System - Roof or Ground?

A sturdy mount holds your system firmly in place and protects the components.

Roof mounts tend to cost less because they use your existing roof structure as foundational support. Ground mounts are more versatile: you can build them anywhere on your property, and point your panels directly at the sun so they operate at peak output.


Roof Mount

Roof-mounted systems do not include the flashings or clamps required to attach the racking to your roof. Your roofing material will dictate what type of fasteners you will need:

Here’s what we recommend, based on your roofing material:

  • Shingle Roofs: The IronRidge Flashfoot 2 is great for shingle roofs.

Ground Mount

Ground mounts allow you to install panels anywhere on your property. The panels can be adjusted to face directly into the sun during peak hours, which ensures your system is as efficient as possible.

Adjustable pole mounts make sense if you live in an area that gets heavy snow. They can be set to a steeper tilt angle, which helps your panels shed snow in the winter. Pole mounts also raise your panels off the ground, which keeps them clear of snow banks that accumulate at ground level.

Pole mounts cost more than a fixed ground mount, but work wonders in the right situation.

The first step is to evaluate your current energy use. In order for us to design a system that works for you, you need to know how much energy you’re currently using. If you want to save money on your system, think about how you can lower your energy use.
The second step is to take a look at the different systems available and get a better idea of what type of system will fit your needs.
Once you know your system type, your next step is to figure out what size your system needs to be. If you plan on living Off-Grid, you need to know how much power your appliances draw. We make this easy with our Off-Grid Calculator. If you’re staying connected to the grid, you’ll want to have the average Kilowatt Hours (kWh) from Step 1 and use our Grid-Tied Calculator.

What Are The Main Types Of Solar Systems?
Solar Terms:

System Size

Grid Tie systems connect to the electrical grid. The power that your solar system produces will offset the power that you consume. To size a Grid Tie system, we need to know your average monthly kilowatt hour (kWh) usage. This is found on your monthly bill. You can also base the size of your system on the space available on your roof or parcel. All systems can be added to over time so if your budget is a factor, you can start small and add to it as your budget allows.


Panels

One of the first things to consider is which kind of panel you would like to use. We offer American made SolarWorld panels, foreign made  Astronergy panels and many more.


Inverters

Solar panels produce direct current (DC) power, but your home uses alternating current (AC) power. To convert the power from DC to AC so you can use it, you need an inverter. We offer three options for Grid Tie inverters: centralized string inverter, micro inverters and SolarEdge inverters. We have a number of predesigned Grid Tie packages on our website, or we can custom design a system to fit your needs.


Racking

Your solar panels can be mounted on your roof, or on the ground. The exact cost of the mounting systems depends on your roofing material or your ground mounted configuration. The roof mounted option averages $50 per panel and the ground mounted option averages $80 per panel. For more information, we have a racking information center on our website. All of our predesigned packages include racking in the system price making it simple for you to select a system that fits your budget and need.


Installation

The majority of our customers are the DIY type. Our systems come with complete product manuals and wiring diagrams. If you’re not interested in climbing on your roof to install your system, any licensed general contractor should be able to assist with the installation of the system for you. Depending on local building regulations, any certified electrician can complete the grid interconnect portion of the installation. Battery Backup Systems

Grid tie solar power systems generally operate only when utility power is available. When the grid goes down, the electricity from your solar panels will be disconnected. Now, battery backup systems with specialized power centers from Four Star Solar enable your gridtied solar panels to charge a battery bank from which you can power your home. Local, State and Federal Incentives

Each state has it’s own set of incentives for sustainable energy. Take a look at the map and click on your state to see what is being offered in your area. There is also a Federal tax credit available for purchases before December 31, 2021.
